Smudge Sticks- DIY

Smudge sticks are used to cleanse a space and banish all negative energy. Here's how to make and use a smudge stick to feel more at peace and balanced in your home, workspace, or even your car!

Making your Smudge Stick

You can make your smudge stick out of the following dried herbs:

  • White Sage,

  • Rosemary

  • Sweet Grass

  • Lavendar

  • Pine

  • and/or Mint

You can also add dried flowers to your smudge stick for decoration or aroma.

Once you choose your herbs, make sure they are completely dry and you have a bundle or herbs about 6 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide (at least).

Wrap your bundle in string going from the bottom to about 3 inches up, and then back down. repeat until the string is used up ( you should start with about 2 ft. of string depending on the size of your smudge stick.) the string will act as a handle as well as keep all of your herbs together.

Now your smudge stick is ready to use!

Using your Smudge Stick

In addition to your smudge stick you will need a bowl to catch ashes in and if you'd like, a feather to help spread the smoke around the room.

Ignite your smudge stick until you can see the inside turning red. Blow out the flame but keep you smudge stick smoldering, (kind of like incense or a cigarette)

As the smoke billows out of the herbs you can either focus on all of the negative energy leaving the space you are cleansing and a new positive light filling the room and you. Or you can say a smudge prayer.

Which ever you choose, make sure to outline all windows corners and doorways with your smudge sticks to make sure that the negative energy isn't welcome to come right back in when the smudging is over.

Here are a few smudge prayers that I like to use while cleansing a space.

"I banish all evil influence from my home, I will not allow it to wreak havoc within the hearts minds and spirit of those who live here"

"Smoke of air and fire and earth

Cleanse and bless this home and hearth

Drive away all harm and fear

Only good may enter here."
